Eric Galvan, New Family Engagement Specialist
One thing Eric Galvan learned through his many years of education was how those from marginalized populations—like those from low income or minority populations—face disparities in not being given the same opportunities to succeed in life. Often this started with not being given the same access to education, academic success, degree attainment, or the resources needed to support their learning. This was the foundation that pushed him to join the team for Student and Family Support at the West Valley School District, where Galvan will start this fall as the new Family Engagement Specialist.
Eric Galvan grew up in Tieton and graduated from the Highland School District in 2012 before attending Central Washington University where he received not only a Bachelor’s Degree, but also a Master’s Degree, in Law and Justice with a specialization in Political Science. He then attended Louisiana State University where he received a second Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration. When he graduated this past December, he returned to work with families here in the Yakima Valley.
As the Family Engagement Specialist, Galvan will provide outreach to monolingual families, helping students and families to access tools and resources to help them succeed—first in school and later in life.
According to Galvan, “Education is the foundational tool necessary to succeed, build character, improve society, innovate, and have a better life.”
Galvan spends his free time with his family, friends, and his Yorkie/Chihuahua mix – Piglet. He says he’s extremely happy to be back home and closer to friends and family. He’s also very excited to join West Valley and work with West Valley families this fall.
