West Valley High School FFA - Future Farmers of America

Central Washington State Fair 2024

Please congratulate FFA members you know on a successful Central Washington State Fair!

Just a few weeks into the 2024/25 school year, on Thursday, September 19, 25 FFA students from West Valley High School contributed to the West Valley horticulture display at the Central Washington State Fair. Many students spent countless hours beforehand preparing our detailed rice board, building a fence, and collaborating for the educational portion of our display. Student Kaylee Guy even spent time shearing, washing, and drying wool from her sheep to use real animal products for West Valley’s display.

The following Tuesday, our FFA students attended the Central Washington State Fair FFA Day to participate in and help facilitate various animal judging competitions including Livestock, Dairy, and Equine (Horse) Evaluation.

On Thursday, September 26, FFA members volunteered their time in the evening for the West Valley Day at the STEAM Building. High School students supervised various activities for children and community members at the fair. Some of the many activities included shadow photos, simulated archeological bone digs, and the creation of colorful Ooblek, a non-Newtonian fluid that has properties of both solid and liquid.

AgriScience Teacher and FFA Advisor, Kaitlyn Smith, expressed gratitude for community partners and teachers at the high school who assisted our FFA students this year. She said, “Thank you to Borton Fruit, Olympic Fruit, Washington Fruit, and Gasseling Ranches for produce donations for the West Valley FFA Display. Steins Ace graciously donated much needed lumber as well. Thank you to Mr. Matczak for helping FFA build a border fence and thank you Mrs. Whitfield for sending us glue when we ran out! We appreciate all the parents, teachers, and students who spent time and effort on this huge project!”

After the fair, FFA students disassembled the large horticulture display and spent time after school getting caught up on homework to maintain a balance within all of these projects.

The West Valley community should be exceptionally proud of this year’s high school FFA members and what they were able to accomplish in such a short time at the beginning of the school year while still meeting the needs of their other classes.
